my submission to telegraph and times of india on the issue of price rise..

THIS ARTICLE IS IN RESPONSE TO THE GOVERNMENT DECISION TO DEREGULATE PRICES OF OIL AND COOKING GAS WHICH LEAD TO INCREASE IN PETROL PRICES BY RS 3.65 PER LITRE AND DIESEL BY 1.95 RS/LITRE AND LPG BY RS 36.40 ON FRIDAY 25,JUNE,2010.
====================================================================================

Sir --recent price rise in petrol,diesel,LPG and kerosene is huge burden put on the shoulders of the middle class families across India where 42% of the population according to worldbank estimate 2005 lives below international poverty line.A small family in calcutta with a small petrol car faces an addititional fuel cost hike of Rs 441.40! of which an additional 36.40 is for the cooking gas which is a irreplaceable necessity for all households today.According to sat 26 article of telegraph calcutta edition had the price rise not been effected then the government would have faced a annual loss of 83000 cr .But sir a sharp rise in prices of diesel,petrol,LPG would only most unavoidable lead to steep hike in prices of all food commodities along with increase in transport fare hike.Which would lead to sharp decrease in domestic consumption leading to inflation which precisely is what the government trying to arrest.So incase the rollback is not possible, government should ensure immediate regulation of essential food commodity prices at the earliest.

Yours faithfully,
uddalak banerjee,calcutta

  1. Sounds too technical. U have done a good homework. But I think that you may think about adding what it actually means and your understanding of th same. The facts and figures are for all to see.

  2. We all know that oil prices are kept regulated in India by the govt . But due to these reduced prices, oil companies are facing huge losses and the time is not far away when the world will face fuel crisis. We know that crude oil reserves are depleting day by day and soon there will b a world without oil. The prices will automatically become high when oil reserves will b on verge of extinction and people will not b able to bear such a drastic change in conditions. Hence it's better that slow hike in petrol prices should b allowed so that there is decrease in its consumption and wastage..ie. oil price should be deregulated according to the global market price. Though it will b a burden to middle class families but this slow inevitable hike has to b accepted with smile. Because if this slow hike is not accepted, then day has to come when there will b a sharp hike at once which will not be at all affordable.
